By now everyone has heard of Hello Fresh, and if you haven’t don’t fret because you’re about to! HelloFresh is a meal kit that ships weekly to your home, reducing the need to spend hours sifting through recipes, meal planning, and grocery shopping. Sounds convenient, right? You may be wondering though, is it worth the money? Is it cost effective?

That’s understandable! I wondered the same thing, and when I found a really good deal on Groupon I decided to give it a shot. So, let me break it down for you and answer the big question–is Hello Fresh worth it?

Lets consider a few important aspects to the Hello Fresh experience.

Hello Fresh Pricing

To order a Hello Fresh box containing two meals per week for two people it would cost $47.96 (without any deals or discounts). That breaks down to be $11.99 per plate. It’s true that $11.99 is a better cost per plate than you would find at most restaurants now-a days. However, you do have to put in the effort of preparing the dish.

This article brings out that the average cost of groceries for a meal is only $4, which is less than half the cost of a Hello Fresh meal. Another thing to note is that the meal kits are calculated very well and only yield the amount of servings you have selected and paid for. In other words, you will not have leftovers–trust me. In fact, sometimes I felt the portion sizes were slightly to small.

Now, if you choose to order meal kits for a larger amount of meals per week the cost per meal does decrease. For example, if a family of two ordered a kit with 6 recipes the cost per plate would come out to be $8.49. That is certainly an improvement, and the cost lowers another dollar per plate if ordering for a family of four.

Is Hello Fresh cheaper than eating out? Definitely. Is it cheaper than regular grocery shopping? I would say definitely not.

Hello Fresh Ingredient Quality

Our next topic of discussion is the quality of ingredients you receive in the meal kits- and I have mixed feelings on this.

On one hand the spice blends and marinades we received in the meal kits were absolutely delicious. Unfortunately my husband and I ran into some issues when it came to the produce.

Twice we had to throw away a produce item and substitute it for something out of our own fridge because it had gone bad. The meals still turned out good, but it was a little frustrating. I can imagine this would be even more of an issue when ordering a large amount of meals each week. The ingredients would have to sit for close to a week.

User Friendliness

Something I love about Hello Fresh is that the recipes are so easy to follow and perfect for beginners. Ahem, that would be me. As someone who is just starting to learn how to cook I really appreciated the very simple, thorough, and easy to understand directions. Something I can’t stand is when recipes don’t specify a temperature to cook something at, and I find this to be a problem with a lot of recipes I try. (Please tell me I am not alone in this.)

I never had this issue with Hello Fresh and I was able to successfully and (mostly) stress free make each meal!

That isn’t the only user friendly thing about Hello Fresh though. When choosing your meals you will be asked your preferences. Whether you’re a big family, vegetarian, pescatarian, or are looking for quick and easy meals- Hello Fresh has something for you.

Speaking of easy, a lot of the meals have a super quick and easy clean up!

So the big question is how do Hello Fresh meals taste? I am happy to report that they taste amazing. Seriously, they are so good. This One Pan Cajun Pork Sausage Skillet recipe was our favorite and we have made it since. I definitely recommend it. We didn’t have a bad meal in the 6 recipes we have tried. They all were delicious!

Is Hello Fresh Worth It?

In conclusion, I think Hello Fresh has its pros and cons but it wasn’t the right fit for my family. We are busy and sometimes want to cook meals that will create leftovers to be enjoyed throughout the week. We also like being able to choose our ingredients and ensure the quality of what we are buying.

However, if you don’t have the time to meal plan and grocery shop, and also need quick meals then Hello Fresh is a great option that also helps prevent eating out as much. Plus you will be getting delicious meals- I promise.

I agree with you. I tried it and the meals taste really good, but of course you pay for the convenience of not having to go to the supermarket or planning your meals. You just have everything there, at your door. For people who are extremely busy and want to save time (and look for an option cheaper and healthier than eating out) is a great option.
